Need help with shocks . . . 200

More on my experience with my newly acquired 1988 240 with 78,000 (verifiable) miles. I feel quite a jolt when I go over bumps that seems to manifest itself as a banging sound in the dash. I originally thought that something was loose in the dash but now I think that the ride is just too stiff, or the shocks are worn. The banging in the dash is worse when I have a passenger and much worse, nearly intolerable, when the car is fully loaded. Also, I recently had a full load and noticed when I turned onto my slightly inclined driveway, that the back made a loud scraping noise. Am I looking at shocks and springs? Part of my inability to assess the situation is my inexperience with Volvos - my previous cars were all big, softly sprung Fords. If I need new shocks, could anybody suggest some that would give me a smooth ride? I'm not into handling, more interested in comfort . . .thanks, Fred
