water pump lasted only a year 200 1985

A year ago I had the leaking water pump on my 1987 240 wagon replaced by a gas station mechanic. I have driven about 10,000 miles since. The day before a 900 miles trip I had my car at my regular Volvo mechanic for some minor work. He told me that the water pump made a sound that indicated that it was bad and that I needed it replaced before my trip. I felt I had no choice but now wonder if it really is possible that a water pump fails so soon. I have the "bad" pump. Can you tell a bad pump by looking at it?
