What do I need in my beginner toolkit? 700

Whatever you buy, mget decent quality. Craftsman's fine, but be suspicious of the "500 piece toolkit, only $49" at K-mart type sales...

700 and 800 only have metric fasteners, so no standard stuff is needed.

Ratchet and screwdrivers are a good start.

A floor jack and some jack stands are absolutely indispensible for work under the car. As is a good work light.

An oil filter wrench (only a couple of bucks) and drain pan will allow you to do your own oil changes.

Add a set of spanners (wrenches - I always forget which is US and which is UK), both open-ended (AKA crescent wrench) and box wrenches (AKA ring spanners). You can't get sockets into every place.

Pliers (needle nose, combination and adjustable pliers plus side cutters makes a fairly comprehensive set) are also a mainstay of wrenching.

Next is some torx screwdrivers (20 and 25 to start with if you can't get a good deal on a set), there's a lot of torx in the interior.

A test light, multimeter and some spare wire will help you diagnose a lot of electric problems. A good quality

That really takes care of 80-90% of the problems, and you'll learn what else you need as you go along. Don't be afraid to drop some money on tools if it means you can do the job yourself, you can buy some really nice tools for what you save on one or two hours of shop time...

Most of us hardcore gearheads have umpty-grand worth of tools in our sheds, and even then most jobs are a matter of wrenches, screwdrivers and sockets.
