Shock lifespan 200 1988

I'm guessing the shocks on our 88 240 wagon are at least 5, possibly 10 years old (with anywhere from 40k to 80K miles). Ride quality and handling seems quite poor compared to our previous 240. My girlfriend doesn't want to go to a stiffer, sportier shock, but should we see much improved ride/handing from new Boge Automatics? I will be installing these in conjunction with some 85 Turbo wagon sway bars. Thanks.
