Is ignition coil dependent on distributor for spark?

Yes, if your '88 has the standard Volvo/Chrysler Ignition, where the ICU does depend on the Hall sender in the distributor for timing impulses.

The '88 does not have an RPM sensor, which came in '89 with the EZ-116K Ignition.
