Fan? Water pump? Some sort of curse? 140-160 1973

So I'm driving home Monday night and suddenly there's an unpleasant noise under the hood that rapidly becomes a very unpleasant noise under the hood. It's the fan hitting something.

Pulling off -- luckily I'm right around the corner from my mechanic so I park it there -- I discover that my fan is totally off the water pump. It's flopping around and the lock spring is fully visible. There's coolant everywhere, though that may be from the hole the fan popped in the radiator as it made the unpleasant sound.

Is this a bad water pump? There wasn't any whirring or screaming and I never ran hot. Did the fan coupling unbolt itself somehow?

It was dark and I had to find a cab. I'll go back in the a.m. What should I look for?

This on top of the Monday a.m. discovery of a fresh oil leak coming from -- somewhere -- and a split ignition wire. And on top of the replacement of two rear calipers a couple of weeks back.

I think a beer is in order.
