Pressurized Overflow Tank After Cranking Engine.... 200 1979

Hello to All,

Ahhhhh.... Here goes.... 1979 264GL B27F

For some strange reason I noticed that the OVERFLOW TANK for the coolant is pressurized as soon as I crank my engine over. I also noticed that my cap (coolant tank) hisses when the engine is hot so I replaced the tank cap thinking the seal or valve was at fault. This led me to find out that as soon as I crank the cold engine over there is pressure built up in the coolant tank. I do not have to crank the engine for very long being that it catches & runs after a couple of seconds. Next I noticed the coolant smelled funny, like EXHAUST funny. The smell inside the coolant tank is bad but I found NO OIL floating around. BLOWN HEAD GASKET??? No water in oil and the oil looked normal and not all milkshake like. There is no steam coming out of the tailpipe and the cars performance is that of a B27F. So I ask anyone who reads this post if your coolant tank gets pressurized the minute you start your cold engine?

I know the PRV's have a WET LINER type setup and I wonder if this is the early signs of a blown head gasket. I have gotten this engine HOT but not overheated when a coolant hose opened up and the coolant fell out. I pulled over once I saw the steam and replaced every hose, water pump, thermostat, and rod-out the radiator to make sure the coolant system was in tip-top shape. I have no idea why the overflow tank and the coolant system in general would pressurize so quickly. A friend suggested a stuck thermostat but would that cause it to pressurize like that.

And just for clarification when I mean pressurized I mean if you take off the cap you hear a loud HISS from the pressure being released from the system. The coolant is not hot, just pressurized somehow. Any advice on this problem would be great. Sorry for the long post and thank to all in advance for their time.

Sincerely,
--
