problems starting 200 1989

alright...well im in the middle of trying to get my 89 240 GL, back in good running condition, and im having a problem with getting the engine to start. Once I do finally get it started it runs great! When i put the key into the ignition and turn, it starts to sound like it might want to kick in. but the engine never actually turns over. I try to give it some gas, and there is no difference. What could be the cause of this problem? Also I am now working on the car after it sitting in the driveway for over a year. I really want to get it back in prestine condition, and im not totally sure of what is all wrong with the car. Should i just take it into a local volvo service shop and see what they tell me? I would really like to save some money and do it myself, so give me any advice that you possibly can.
