Failing M46? 700

I have a 1990 745 turbo with 240,000km (160,000 mi). Recently I noticed that while in 2nd or 3rd gear (moderate acceleration), something is rapidly engaging and disengaging. It seems to happen once the car is fully warmed up, after driving for 15 or 20 minutes. The feeling is similar to driving on patchy, icy roads, when the car is getting traction on dry pavement and then abruptly losing traction on ice, with this happening in fairly rapid cycles. I am currently using Redline MTL fluid that is about a year old.

My theory is that it has something to do with the overdrive, the rear diff or possibly the rubber disc that connects the transmission to the prop shaft. I recently corrected a loose wire that caused my OD to briefly slip in and out - is it possible that my OD got damaged from this?

Any help would be appreciated.
