Thermostat replacement 900 1992

92 960 wagon. At idle, when outside temp is cold, Car warms up great. Start going down the road and the temp gauge goes down and heat isn't as hot. I assume this is the thermosat sticking open? I read the FAQ and it mentioned opening the petcock on the bottom of the radiator to drain a small amount of coolant. Is it necessary to do this in order to change the thermostat? It looks to be very easy to do. Any warnings in doing this job?
