taking a longer trip... is this safe? 200 1984

Ok, 1984 245ti, im driving from milwaukee to indianapolis through chicago this coming weekend. I bought the car about 3 months ago and am taking it home for my christmas break to title. The car runs good but when driven on the highway exhibits a slight shake in the steering and sometimes a metal shaking noise. I know that the boot over the balljoint on the drivers side is torn, is the exposure making this clunking? is it crazy for me to try to drive home without repairs and will this possibly come apart/fail and cause an accident/kill me en route? any experience with the boot being torn and the severity of this would be much appreciated.
