tranny problem, or...? 200 1988

Our 88 240 Wagon, 135K miles, automatic, well maintained, very dependable, has suddenly developed a problem. Goes into Reverse fine, and into Drive, but when you give it gas in Drive the RPMs seem to go up (we don't have a tach so I don't know for certain) but it's like the car has no power or the tranny is slipping or something. I checked the fluid level and it's fine (and I checked the correct way, in Park at idle). What does this sound like? It can hardly muster up hills. Tranny fluid smelled ok, maybe just the slightest bit burned but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

Also, does it sound like this could be a fuel problem, or more specifically someone tampering with and/or putting something other that gas in the gas tank? Without going into specifics the timing of this is a bit odd, and it developed very suddenly.

Thanks for any input.
