If you have a 97 with OBD2 the only way to read codes is with an OBD2 scanner which connects to a plug on the side of the console. There are many versions of these scanners including a PC based systems which are used with software and a connection to the PC serial port. There are also various hand held units which sell for about $150.

There is no way to read the codes any other way.

Some auto parts stores including AutoZone will read and clear codes using their hand held for free.

Not aware of how the older OBD systems with flashing lights and jumpers etc are connected to the ECU but this is not an option with the OBD2 systems.
