Rough idle and 'hunting' 200 1989

I got a call from the garage to say the car's idle was irratic- hunting up and down. Left over night it didn't show any signs the next AM- but they did do a fuel pressure test. Okay apparently. The moment I left I was aware that the idle was off- at a red light it is nervous, quietly unhappy under the hood. Sort of the shakes the morning after a good bender!!

It is an '89 240 Dl, with 242k kilometres (148+/- miles). Tune up and all standard maintainance have been followed. The mechanic, Dave Hurds, gave no indication of what it was (which is surprising since he is a vault of prior Volvo experience). I go some injector cleaner and dumped it in with a tank of Sunoco Ultra 94, but there are no results to report yet.

Thoughts any one?....Doug in Toronto
