I am a dufus - rear passenger wheel is stuck? 1981 GL (240)

well, i had posted last night in the RWD forum about possibly having a clutch or tranny issue, but it looks like the suspect is the rear passenger-side wheel. it does not move, or at least, we found out it was stuck when trying to ease it off the ramp of the tow truck. it appears that this is the reason why the car did not seem to get in gear - it was in gear but not moving anywhere because of a stuck rear wheel. could this be that the caliper has seized up somehow? this all seemed to start very recently. can the weather have any impact on this? (it is 7 degrees fahrenheit in minneapolis right now) i was on the wrong track thinking it was a clutch/tranny problem. perhaps a night of sleep always helps you figure out the problem.

are there any other causes besides a stuck caliper?

the other likely scenario i can think of is the parking/emergency brake. i have no way of telling what it is right now, because the mechanics are looking at it (supposedly). the place i took it to is reputed to be expensive so i am trying to figure out what's happening before i get my pants pulled down over the price.

ALSO: i seemed to be sliding a lot on the snow in the car, as it is rear wheel drive. i put 180 pounds of sandbags in the trunk for better traction. is this excessive?

thanks,
aaron
