Erratic Tacho! 700 1990

My recently purchased 1990 745 SE has an erratic tachometer. Most of the time it works perfectly, but sometimes it won't work until I whack the dash top with my hand. Occasionally it doesn't work at the start of a journey, but midway through it starts to work. Other times it jumps around like it has St Vitus' Dance before it will work normally! All other gauges are fine...

As I am new to 740s (I'm now in love with them!) could anyone tell me whether the actual tachometer head is at fault or just the connections? Any advice would be appreciated greatly.
