How to get the car to shut off lights on shutting down engine

The newer 240s (starting around '86) include a large relay in the headlight circuit. This relay is mounted on the inside firewall, just ahead of the brake pedal. The relay is triggered "on" by the ignition key so that current can flow to the headlights when the key is on. When the key is turned off, the headlight current is switched off by the relay even if the headlight switch is on. (Think of two switches in series.)

I'm sure that with a good used relay, a wiring schematic for your 240 and the newer 240, and some work that you could retrofit the relay into your car, not necessarily in the same location -- maybe, for example, near the "hi-lo" relay underhood.
