There's a very nice adapter kit, which should include a wiring harness you can use, as well as the black plastic surround, and it sells for about $15 from Crutchfield, or your local stereo/electronics shop.

You do need that piece- I put an Alpine in the wife's 88 740 last year, and ended up with an extra 240 top-mount adapter from the kit, which we used in an 88 245 later in the year. There are 3 pieces in the kit,one for a 740 and 2 for early and late 240.
