mystery patching compound no longer a mystery 120-130

Problem solved! After closely examining what I thought was some type of mystery patching compound, turns out it was thick layer of dry red paint, which had pooled up in various areas.

Forget about the question concerning part interchangeability, only question remaining is, should I remove that red paint from inside of extension piece, or does it not really matter one way or another?
