driving light mounting question 200 1988

I have a 1988 245dl, and I would like to mount a set of 7" driving
lights on the front bumper. Is the bumper made of metal under the
rubber cover (can it be drilled to accept bolts for the lights)?
.
As far as obstructing the radiator, I have driven in warm weather
with two 6" cardboard circles taped to the grille to simulate
driving lights, and the car didn't overheat (6" because _some__
airflow will go around the lights).
.
The other option is to somehow mount the lights behind the grille,
cut the plastic vanes out of the grille, and replace them with sturdy
black wiremesh. This would have the added benefits of protecting
the lights from breakage if a rock comes flying, and possibly looking
pretty cool.
.
-b.
