1973 p-1800es electrical 1800

i haven't driven the car much at night. anyway, with the headlights on, i turned on the right turn signal and within 30 seconds the engine died. waited about 5 minutes and it started. died again within a minute and got it startrd again in a minute. the red alt light came on concurrent with the failure. sometimes i have to reseat the fuses (just run my finger over them) and things get better. my sense is that an electrical component (voltage regulator?) is over heating and recovers after a short cool down period.
any suggestions will be appreciated. tia
