does my car have a 'gear sensor'? 700 1992

Not really. There's a switch that makes contact in certain shifter positions- it's in the console mounted right on the side of the shift lever.
It gives you the neutral safety interlock- allowing the car to be started only in P or N. It also turns on the reverse lights in R.
This can get slightly out of alignment with the mechanical/hydraulic valve in the trans if the linkage is damaged or worn out (small rubber bushings, ~$1 each), or when the rear transmission rubber mount goes bad. A lot of them are pretty soft, and the mounts do split and fail too.
The mount should be inspected, and the shift linkage checked for play fore-aft.

It does not have an electronically controlled transmission like a 960 or 850/70 car, so there's no PNP switch or any othe electronic modules. THe trans is all hydraulic inside.
