D-type only works... 120-130

...upon decel.
I put an old unknown condition D type M41 in my new beater '68 122 wagon.
It'll whine into OD only to whine back out and then come on again as soon as I let up.
(I can live with the howl if only it would function consistantly)
What gives?
Can I fix it in the car?
