steering rod end (tie rod end) replacement on 940 GLE? 900

my wife and i just bought this 940 GLE wagon in august. it has a 117K and has been running great. the steering was a little chunky when we got it. the steering has loosend up a bit and now there is a little play. i'm looking to replace the rod end and possibly rod as well by myself. we can't really afford to pay someone else to do it and i would rather work on the car myself anyway. however, i've never done this before and just wondered if anyone could give me some pointers or just flat out warn me not to do it or something. doesn't look tooooo difficult to get at but you never know till you get in there. also, i've got a squeeling sound when the car first starts up, could the timing belt be too tight? if so how worried should i be about adjusting it? thanks for any help.
