My '65 122 has a B21 engine, B23 Sidedraft SU Carb and an M41 O/D Gearbox. I was trying to put together a good 122 daily driver (trying to keep the car as visually original as possible), and I like the design of the B21/23/230 engines (plus the engine and tranny was free). No alterations were done to the body of the car so far (Just two holes to mount the 240 gas pedal).
The project started when someone gave me a recently rebuilt '79 B21F engine along with a M46 tranny + everything attached to it. I decided to try and install it in my 122.
I did trade the M46 for a rebuilt M41/J-OD to limit the alterations to the car's body.
The following is a quick list of the work done:
Motor mounts-> the original engine-to-motor mount brackets were cut, altered, and welded back together.
Alternator-> a bracket was made to install the alternator on the cylinder head. The cylinder head has some mounting points for an air pump.
Oil Pan-> a '75 B20 oil pan and oil pump was used to compensate moving the engine from the slant to the vertical position.
Electronic ignition setup from Crane.
Carb set-up-> a Canadian 1983 B23 SU with a '79 intake with all accessories was used.
Intake manifold-> a pie section of the carb intake manifold was removed and the manifold was welded back together.
Gas pedal-> the Canadian carburetor 240 gas pedal setup with a cable was used.
Exhaust -> the B21 downpipe was cut and welded into the 122 exhaust system.
Radiator - A custom radiator was made using the 240 radiator tanks with a new core. The 122 radiator was used for the mounting brackets. 740 overfill tank (good for space reduction and its round!). Electric Fan was needed for space constrictions in the engine compartment.
Bilstein HD shocks.
New master and slave clutch cylinder.
IPD rear bushing kit.
New rear brakes/cylinders.
Rust-free fenders/nose section. Stripped down to metal, POR Metal Ready, and painted with POR-15.
Original rims widened to 6 inches with 1 inch positive offset.
240 electrical temperature gauge mounted in the 122 instrument cluster (looks close to original, 122 temperature faceplate was used, but the needle is a little thicker than the original).
1981 OD relay setup was used, and wired so the turn signal stalk (Non-US High Beam switch) momentary switch activates the OD.
Still working on:
Fuel injection-> Thinking of going with EFI using a Megasquirt setup. Trying to modify a B230 intake to fit it into the engine compartment. The only way it will fit is if the throttle body is rotated to the top of the manifold -> more cutting and welding.
Would like to install rear disc brakes. I hear IPD is working on a trailing arm kit to install the newer style rearends on the older cars.
Retractable seat belts.
Body and interior needs work. The project was a mechanical venture, not cosmetic.
The project has been ongoing since 1999, with the engine installed in July '99. I guess Im in the road-test phase of my project.
Running great!
