non-Volvo SU question 120-130

A co-worker who has no mechanical inclination drives his father's classic MGB. Today he stopped by my office and told me the car wouldn't start this morning. It cranks and sputters, but doesn't catch and run. Turns out he hasn't driven the car in about a month and last night was in the 20's; he wondered about ice in the fuel line. I asked if he had kept oil in the dampers of the SU's. At first he said, "Of course" but then the story got interesting. He added oil to the carbs the last time he used the car (the oil level was pretty low), but mistakenly used brake fluid in the dampers. Will brake fluid damage the seals? Could having this lower viscosity oil in the dampers cause these symptoms?
