thanks a lot folks.

my oil cover cap doesn't appear to have a gasket so that's the second step (just replaced the flame trap filter and checked the hose going into the oil separator). how the hell do you get to the oil separator? i'll check that link mentioned but it looks tight as hell. there's definately oil spitting out from the filler cap, but the oil is particularly thick around the filter area. something tells me that there may be a problem around there. my mechanic doesn't spill oil, but he wasn't the one that serviced the brick for it's first 245K miles.
