REmoving 'breather box' or separator 200 1983

I have a 1983 GL which has the old style oil separator (is this the SAME as "breather box"?)

I will be replacing the flame trap and related pieces installing a kit today or tomorrow. I have no idea if the oil separator has ever been cleaned or replaced.

If I remove it to inspect it and clean it, if necessary, do I need to drain the oil from the car? Or is the only connection between the separator and the engine lubrication system the drain into the oil sump? And if the latter, will gravity force the drain hose to spew or leak oil when the box is removed?
