random headlamp malfunction ???? 900

1991 940se turbowagon-225k

in the last few months, both lowbeams have been going out together at random times. i have to turn on my highbeams quick when this happens, then i'll just keep testing the lows until they decide to come back on. replaced the passenger side headlight a while ago, this wasn't happening prior to being replaced, and didn't begin happening until a while after. it doesn't correlate with bumps in the road or moisture, no bulb out light comes on, and it's not the fuse or the bulb. what gives? i've got bigger fish to fry with the car at this point, but this is one of the annoying things that i don't feel like letting slide in the future. what gives?
