What is burning out my fuel pump relay?????

I drive a 1980 Volvo DL, and the other day it broke down. It had stalled a couple of times the week before, which was odd, but if I just waited a few seconds, it would start right up. This time it did the exact same thing, but it wasn't starting back up. It sounded like it was starting strong, but it would never actually turn over. So a friend came to look at it, and figured out that the fuel pump relay was shot, so we rigged the switch in the relay so the feul pump would stay running, and sure enough it started right up. The next day we got a new relay and replaced the dead one, and afterward, it ran perfectly, for about twenty minutes, than it did the exact same thing again, burnt out the relay. When I swapped it out with the one we had rigged, it started right up. I'm at a loss, what is burning out these relays? Any ideas? Thanx, Adam
