rear ground wire broken 200 1992

ok, so i've found what everyone has been telling me about, the wire in the hinges of the tailgate that breaks. I have an idea though, is it possible to ground it somewhere else? like, rather than in the tailgate hinges, find where the ground wire starts, put a different wire on it and ground it someplace else? this i think would save time and money, one wouldn't need to buy a whole new harness and their electrical problems could be fixed. any input from anyone?
