Timing Belt Issue 700 1989

I changed the timing belt on my '89 740 a couple of days ago. I took a peek at it this morning and noticed that about 25% of the belt width is not riding on the cam gears. I'm pretty sure I put everything back together the same way it came off. The old timing belt was 100% on the cam gears before removal. Any ideas as to what could be the problem?
