TPS sensor and MPG? 700 1986

The TPS might be stuck in the "Idle" mode. There should be "clicks" heard in it (and resulting changes in continuity) at two spots - just as the throttle plate comes up off of idle, and just as it approaches FULL throttle. That might explain why flooring the pedal temporarily cleared up your problem.

It would be necessary to check it out with an ohm meter to be certain that it is "making" and "breaking" the way it should.

The 700/900 FAQs may have info on testing the TPS.
