Rear Window defrost stuck ON 200 1983

New problem with ny 1983 240GL. The switch to turn on the rear window defroster/defogger is stuck ON. When I saw this a few days ago, the indicator light on the switch showed it was on; my son tells me the light is no longer on, but the switch is in the on position. Would the switch being stuck in "on" position present any safety issue? Will the unit "burn out"? How can I unstick the switch without pulling the dashboard out and replacing it?
