I got brave and tried to do spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and air filter myself. At first, once I was done, all was okay; but as I was test driving, we ran into problems. History of procedures and problems follows; please provide input. This is for a 1983 GL normally aspirated.
The spark plugs had not been changed for some time, obviously; and were somewhat difficult to remove. Put in properly gapped NGK plugs. Used oil on threads. All went in easily. Distributor cap removed easily; old rotor would not come out. The metal disc below the rotor was loose; perhaps that is normal. Left old rotor in; but new Borg Warner distributor cap on. Was careful about the plug wires; tested; car ran fine.
Also replaced air filter. Couldn't get filter box open; attempted to remove the hose from filter box; couldn't get that end off. Tried to remove from the other end--is that the air mass meter?--and the hose began to crack along a seam. The hose involved was a stiff plastic, not a flex hose. Finally had to loosen the box that this hose fits on to to get it off, to get off filter cover; got filter replaced; with great difficulty got hoses clamped back in place and the box (that may be the amm) bolted back in place.
Car ran.
Washed car, took for test drive. AFter about 10 miles, on the highway, it began missing; I put car in neutral and began braking; car died. After a rest, it started up, went a mile or two; died again. each time we tried, the car ran shorter times and had to wait longer between tries.
Any diagnosis of something I may have done wrong, or something that may have broken in the process?
EXTRA NOTE: AFter my son's wreck last week causing front end damage only, we found a yellow wire had become disconnected from something. It is not the temp sensor wire; the temp gauge behaves normally.
