Varying idle either really high or low 200 1986

I recently purchased a 1986 volvo 240 gl and after getting a few things worked on so it would pass inspection got it on the road i had it for less than a week. i was up by the mall in my area and the roads weren't that great i parked my car went in a store came back out started my car put it in reverse and it jumped like i had hit the gas pedal quickly which i hadn't, but i thought nothing of it. i make it out of the parking lot and go to turn at an intersection but i go straight the back tires are just puching me where they want to go which is straight. i avouid hitting a few things and get it parked and i look at the tach and it reads about 2200rpm when over the past week it had been at about 800 to 1000 rpm. the next day o got my oil changed it was running alittle better but now the idle seems to jump between 800 and 1000rpms in park about 500 rpms in reverse and between 800 and 1200 rpms in drive i was wondering it there was a way i could fix this so i have a constant and reliable idle so something liek what happened to me while shopping won't happen again. any help would be very much appreciated
