CAMBER OR DAMAGE 700 1987

RECENTLY AQUIRED A 760 WAGON.
Several different shops have diagnosed the driver side wheel as having too much negative camber (visually the wheel is further in at the top)
I have heard a variety of fixes, from a "strut-bender" to replace the strut as well as slot the top bolts.
My question is how much clearance should there be between the strut tower and the tire. On the passenger side, there is enough clearance for my hand to pass but on the drivers side there is less than 1/4 inch between the tower and the tire. It appears that the axel or some other suspension part is bent.
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. I would like to have all parts before starting a tear down.
thanks
