losing turbo on 740 700

Hello
I have a question that maybe someone will have some thoughts on.
I bought a high mile 85 740turbo. I have it running reasonably now, but I am wondering if it would be possible to ditch the turbocharger if it gives trouble. I imagine I will need a non turbo exhaust manifold plus adapt to big turbo exhaust, I wonder what electronics I might need? Is the turbo engine lower compression than a non turbo (in other cars this is common)? If so how much lower, I want to end up with at least 80hp so it is driveable. I am really not concerned if it is underpowered, but I want to avoid spending money on a new turbo. It seems like if I can get rid of the turbo I can keep it going quite cheap from the junkyard. Does anyone have any ideas about how this might go?
thanks Aaron
