OK, so here's the latest. almost two weeks, two shops later. The latest shop says actually, my clutch appears to be beautiful. They claim the issue lies with the overdrive unit. The symptoms were that first the overdrive made a bad grinding noise when engaged, then suddenly within a week, i lost any ability to drive the car. engine is fine, i just cannot ever get the car into gear to make it go.
i can't afford to keep an otherwise roadworthy car under these circumstances. i can't find an overdrive unit at any local salvage yards. my guess is it's something to do with actuating pistons in the unit or something like that. so here's some questions:
how much could i expect to pay with a rebuilt or used OD unit? the shop quoted the part and labor in excess of 1300 dollars. I cannot or will not pay for anything above 800. If there is no workaround for this, you are all more than welcome to have a 81 GL (240) with 107k original miles for 300 dollars, provided you come and get the bastard in minneapolis.
what is really happening here? how is that the OD unit fails, according to these people, and then the whole transmission/clutch system is affected such that the car won't run anymore?
300 dollars is what i paid for the car at a goodwill thrift store early last summer. i can no longer afford to do these arcane repairs when economically it's no longer worth it. anyone with some ideas on this, i would be very thankful. or, as i mentioned, if you want to come take this beast at what i paid for it (which is a fair price, imho) come put me out of my misery. brand new tires as of november. several new calipers, brake pads, rotors and new master cylinder as of late july. new blower motor as of november.
what was it someone said about 240s being troublesome? heh.
