Hi. I'm glad that you said that you "like to get them 'just so'"
You have to avoid the temptation that if they're too loose you don't get enough vacuum, and go make them tighter to get the most vacuum. There's even more downside to adjusting them too tightly, as the valves, especially the exhaust valves, won't remain fully seated long enough to dissipate their heat into the head -- contact with the head actually cools off the exhaust valves -- and you'll have a burned valve.
Bottom line -- get them just right (as you said :-). Good luck and happy holidays.
