1981 GL (240) demon hell ride update - do you know transmissions? need help... 200

1981 GL (240) 107k miles. the shop, having more time to tell me what's up, says it's a rear shaft that comes out of the transmission and involves the overdrive clutch. they claim the fix is a reman unit from borton volvo, the local dealer to beat (not on parts prices, of course) can someone tell me what this is and if there may be a cheaper fix other than scrounging for a complete m46 unit? i'm asking again because at least i have slightly more specific info from the guys now.
