Rebuilt 960 engine vs. sell 960 & buy 940? All advice welcome --longish post 900 1992

Looks like the spousemover '92 965 is about to bite the big one; running funky, higher fuel and oil usage, and 1 cylinder down to 60 lbs compression. 140K miles. Love the creature comforts, but may be like hanging on to Enron stock just because the certificates are pretty.
I have neither skill nor time & space to do this kind of work, so will be getting bid from local indy re rebuilding to compare with cost of installing volvo rebuilt engine, and with best guess re selling car as is and getting a nice 945 ( my inclination) or later-year 965 / S90. (spare me the "drop in a 454" or "turn it into a 'vette" stories--tantalizing but not workable.)
I like to keep cars as long as fixing is feasible, if reliability is not a problem--had 300+ K miles on the '85 740 TD and 600+ on the '81 240 before they were retired. However, I tend to draw the line if a new engine install costs as much as another car of like kind and quality.
Questions:
1. Which models of 940 would have about the same level of trim and accessories as the all-leather soccer mom 960; which years or variants of 940 should be sought/avoided; and what price range should be expected in the 75-100 K mile or lower range? Is it worth it to look at later 960s at all?

2. Given the bad press on the '92 960s and the engine problem on this one, can anyone advise where the neighborhood of the break-even between fixing and selling is likely to be ( and I know it won't be Mr Rogers' neighborhood, by a long shot)?

Advice gratefully received; gratuitously cruel automotive humor expected as well. TIA
