Welding advice 200 1984

I removed all the trim on the doors and panels of my 245. I am, however, keeping the raised strip of metal that runs the length of the car. My goal is to weld the holes in the body closed. I don't want to mess around with bondo anymore for this job. So has anyone done this? Any tips or advice would be welcome. The gaff tape is no longer keeping out the water :(

This is what I'm after: http://turbobricks.com/img/gallery/doug-3.jpg

Thanks a million
Oliver

Oh, I was watching "Trucks" and he showed how to shave the handles off a door using some kind of washer when he welded to help fill little bolt holes....if that makes sense....
