Thanks for all your experienced opinions, suggestions and encouragements! I think I feel ill...

Since I'm in Champaign, Illinois, I've already scheduled a look-see at the Volvo dealer where my friend is a mechanic. He won't be able to do much if it's a rack, since they don't stock them, but he should be able to help determine what is wrong.
