Check Engine light 700 1990

Hey, quick, and hopefully simple question for you all. The check engine light is now on while the engine is running in my 1990 740gle-16valve. It was not before. I used the diagnostic that is under the hood (drivers side) and it blinked 1-1-1, so that says to me, all is well. BUT, is this only an ignition diagnostic? What could cause the check engine light to come on? The catalytic converter is non-existant, so that's not clogged. Who's got the answer? Thanks in advance-
