'82 240 OD Causing Engine Power Loss 200 1982

This car's OD usually won't engage 'till 30-45 minutes, then will go in OK. However, now the engine starts to buck and quit and surge when the OD's engaged, but will run fine in non-OD mode. I'm able to duplicate the symptoms without fail----engage OD, engine starts surging, losing power, etc. Disengage OD, engine purrs like new. Any ideas about what's wrong here?
