What is wrong with my oil pressure gauge? 200

Here's the story: a few weeks ago my 5 bar oil pressure gauge that I wired into my '86 240DL a year or so back suddenly quit working. It would peg itself to the max as soon as I started it up. So I got a brand-new sending unit, a 2-pole VDO unit. So I put in the new sender today, and it still doesn't work. It still has the same pegging problem with the gauge. The wiring is all good. I cleaned off all the adapters to make sure there is ground and checked for power and ground in the gauge. It seems as though I don't have ground through the sender, since when I hooked up my voltmeter and switched it to Ohms and tried to run power through the meter to the sender, it didn't read ANYTHING. So what's the problem here? So, if I lost the ground to the sender, how could it have happened when everything is clean and has no tape or anything on it? I just don't get it. I guess I'll try soldering a wire onto the sender and running it to ground? Any ideas would be much appreciated. thanks and merry christmas!
