82 240 Stalled on freeway

Cutting out at speed is a coomon symptom of a bad fuel pump relay. When it cools down it will often function again. You can replace it, but simply re-soldering it will often fix the problem -see the 700/900 FAQ feature section. The relay in your '82 is a compound relay that also controls the auxiliary air valve used for warmup idle speed. If you've been having problems in that area then re-soldering/replacing the relay may fix that too.

Excessive cranking after the car has been sitting is often a sign that the fuel pressure is slowly leaking down when the car is parked. This can be caused by a gummed up or worn check ball assembly on the main fuel pump outlet. Cleaning the check ball assembly sometimes works, otherwise it needs replacement.
