Dash Speakers Seem To Be Powered From Head Unit-- Door Speakers From AMP 900

Hello

We would appreciate any discussion regarding the wiring of factory speakers for the 940 series.

We have pulled our oem head unit which has failed and also disconnected the oem amp.

We have connected both wiring harness from Scouche for the replacement aftermarket head unit.

We checked the wiring which exited the head unit and the amp.

It appears that the 940's offered different speaker configs.

Our 93 960 and 95 940 has 2 dash 2 front door 2 rear deck

Our 91 940 has 2 dash 2 front door 2 REAR DOOR

Testing the wires it seems as though in all cases where dash speakers exist the dash speakers are powered directly from the head unit.

It appears the 4 remaining speakers receive their power exiting the oem amp.

We have 2 aftermarket head units to install.

The new units have wiring for 4 speakers.

Here are some questions.

The one car has 7+ ohms for the dash and front door speakers but only 4 + ohms for the rear door speakers. I checked the rear doors and the speakers are oem so they have not been replaced with after market. Is it possible that both rear door speakers are orinally 8 ohm speakers that are weak? Possibly contributing to the failure of head unit.

Secondly one of the head units we have to use for replacement has a wiring diagram attached on the the unit which indicates 7 Watts each for two speakers and 25 Watts EACH for the other two speakers. Does that make this a 64 Watt radio? It is an unused 8 year old Blaupunkt. Today it seems that when one speaks of a 64 watt unit, people generally talk about 64 Watts or some other number to EACH speaker. Not the sum of all the speakers together.

I have spoken to enough installers to come to the feeling that just about anything goes in the wiring of aftermarket products. That doesn't mean that the head unit will tolerate it permanently.

Please help with technical information regarding wiring 6 speakers with aftermarket head unit with wiring for four speakers.

Finally the dash speakers seem stuck. I removed the thin plate at the front and turned the plastic keys. Will not pry out very easily.

Thanx for the help and the discussion.

Bill
