Brake light problems!!! Need help 200

Here's my situation. I have an 89 240 dl wagon. When my headlights are off my brake lights work (both sides). When I turn the headlights on and press the brakes instead of both sides coming on brighter the passenger's side (right) goes out completely and the (left) driver's side gets a little brighter. Once I let go they both go back to normal. Any explanation, help, or advice??? Thanks in advance, Steven
